Supplier code of conduct

Launched in 2013, our Supplier Code of Conduct is a contract that forms the basis of our supplier relationships, helping us drive sustainability throughout our supply chain. All our suppliers are required to comply with the code.

The Code of Conduct sets out all the requirements and standards we expect from suppliers regarding business ethics, human rights, labour rights, environment and social engagement. It is aligned with international standards such as the Global Compact and the Ethical Trade Initiative’s base code.

As we increasingly source from global markets, the Code of Conduct is a particularly useful tool for managing relationships with suppliers outside the EU.

Monitoring compliance

To make sure suppliers are complying with the code, we use a risk-based audit approach. This includes:

  • A standard supplier evaluation
  • A detailed questionnaire
  • Audits based on evaluations, questionnaires, country risks, experience, criticality of supplier and food safety
  • Audit follow-up and remedial action plans

Impact

In 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 we carried out 16, 22, 26, 16 and 9 supplier audits respectively of which 15 audits were of cane raw materials and cane products. The audited suppliers have been situated in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

In the few cases of non-compliance, mainly within safe working conditions, we have agreed upon remedial action plans.

The supplier audits performed:
